Various factors studied in co-locating facilities

Various factors studied in co-locating facilities

We thank Mr Yang Chun Hong for suggesting co-locating more facilities to optimise our land use (“Work together for better facilities in Pioneer”; Sept 22).

The Urban Redevelopment Authority works actively with relevant agencies on this when planning facilities to meet residents’ needs.

One example is the integrated community hub at Jurong West Central 3, which serves the Pioneer estate and houses the Frontier Community Club, Jurong West Public Library, Jurong Medical Centre and a food and beverage outlet.

When assessing the feasibility of co-locating different uses, we consider several local factors, such as the availability of land and of similar facilities in the vicinity as well as the impact on the surrounding community and traffic.

We had studied the possibility of co-locating the childcare centre with the market and hawker centre at the Jurong West Street 61 site. However, the site is not big enough to accommodate such an integrated development.

Co-locating the childcare centre with the market and hawker centre may also give rise to traffic congestion and safety concerns, as the site is near a road junction and bus stop. Nonetheless, a childcare centre will still be provided in the vicinity, on Jurong West Street 65.

We thank Mr Yang again for his feedback.

Work together for better facilities in Pioneer

I refer to the report “Clinic, hawker centre and 500-seat theatre at new CC in Hougang” (Sept 21) and applaud the fact that the Community Club is the first of its kind.

In contrast, in Jurong West Street 61, a plot of land beside Pioneer Mall that is bounded by blocks of flats will house a proposed market and hawker centre, and only that.

Meanwhile, a two-storey childcare centre will be built on another plot of land (along Jurong West Street 65), in land-scarce Singapore.

Can our agencies work together and propose better design of facilities in new premises, such as for a new CC, in Pioneer estate?

Yang Chun Hong
