Planning more roads and town typologies encouraging a walk-cycle-ride lifestyle
Discover how autonomous vehicles could reshape towns with safer travel, less parking, and more green and shared spaces.
We will continue to push the envelope for a car-lite city. Over the longer horizon, we will plan to incorporate more people-centric road typologies in future housing towns to make it safer to walk, cycle and ride. For example, Tengah’s Park District will be Singapore’s first car-free town centre where roads will run underground, thus freeing up space at the ground level for retail and recreational use. In this way, residents can also access amenities and public spaces safely.

As we strive towards making our city more active mobility friendly, such as by building cycling paths islandwide, we will also consider the need to balance the trade-offs involved, given our land constraints. They include ensuring dedicated facilities are provided for commuter groups with different needs, prioritising spaces for urban logistics, public transportation and emergency vehicles, as well as the associated infrastructure costs.
