About
These 19th century shophouses (Nos. 15 to 23 (odd numbers)) are among the oldest surviving buildings in Chinatown.
The History
Idol carvers were once a common sight in the area and Say Tian Kok, established at 19 Club Street in 1897, was one such shop dealing in this specialist trade.
The Building
The shophouses are of the Early style, characterised by their plain facades and low floor-to-ceiling height — the result of limited access to imported building materials, technology, and skilled labour.
The Legacy
Prior to the restoration of the shophouses, they were in poor condition and some parts had to be shored up to prevent collapse. The shophouses have since been given a new lease of life and put to adaptive reuse.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
