The four conserved buildings (Blocks 48 to 51) were previously occupied by officers from the Royal Artillery and formed part of the numerous military facilities built on Sentosa by the British from the latter half of the 19th century onwards.
The History
Prominently located on elevated ground, Block 49 was a barracks for unmarried officers while Block 48 was the officers' mess. Blocks 50 and 51 were a pair of bungalows for married officers and their families. Sited on lower ground and away from the barracks, their location offered the families of married officers more privacy.
The Legacy
Today, these buildings which have since been lovingly restored stand out amidst the well-planned and beautifully manicured landscape.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
