About
The development consists of nine Late style shophouses (105, 107 & 109 Jalan Sultan & 54 to 64 (even numbers) Aliwal Street) and a former printing house, the Al-Ahmadiah Press (101 Jalan Sultan). Established in 1920 by nobility from the Natuna Islands in Indonesia, the printing house was part of a thriving publications industry dealing with Islamic and Malay literature that was centred in Kampong Glam.
The Legacy
In its adaptation into a hotel — The Sultan — the original internal spatial character has been retained. Fine plaster and timber details in the façades have been restored and traditional patterned flooring reintroduced in the five-foot way. Overall, the project enhances the historic ambience of Jalan Sultan.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
