Historic address: 8 Townshend Road

About
This development comprises five pre-war shophouses at 2–10 (even numbers) Townshend Road and a modern extension at the rear.
The History
Townshend Road was named after Major-General Sir Charles Townshend K.C.B., D.S.O., a British Army officer. Many other roads in the Jalan Besar area were similarly named after First World War British and French military officers and battle sites, including Allenby Road, Maude Road, Petain Road, Somme Road, and Verdun Road.
The Legacy
The façades of the shophouses had undergone various modifications over the years, and restoration works sought to reinstate their original features, such as the timber louvred transoms, timber windows, and balustrades. The sensitive restoration of the shophouses has helped to recapture their original beauty and charm.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
