About
This black and white bungalow was built in 1912 by the architectural firm Williams and Steadman for prominent businessman Ong Sam Leong (1857–1918).
The History
In 1923, well-known accountant Osborne Robert Sacheverel Bateman acquired the bungalow. It was later sold to business magnate and founder of Cathay Organisation, Loke Wan Tho, in 1947, after which the Government of India acquired the property.
The Building
The bungalow's style is Tropical Tudorbethan, characterised by half-timbered black and white façades and steeply pitched roofs with gable ends, adapted for the tropical climate.
The Legacy
The bungalow was reinstated to its former glory in 2009.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
