About
The two-storey shophouses at Nos. 5 & 9–21 (odd numbers) along this street were built during the earlier half of the 20th century as middle-class family residences.
The Building
The Late style façades feature rich ornamentation reflecting influences from both East and West.
The Legacy
To introduce diversity in the treatment of interior spaces, the owner engaged different architects for each shophouse on the same fixed and modest budget. While original architectural features such as the windows and wall tiles from Belgium were retained and restored, each shophouse showcases a distinctive and refreshing character internally.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
For conserved shophouses with proposed rear extensions in Geylang Conservation Area, the new extensions are subject to the Geylang Urban Design Guidelines.
