About
This pre-war bungalow was designed by Frank Wilhelm Brewer (1886–1971), the first university-trained architect to practise in Singapore.
The Building
The bungalow features Brewer's classic hallmarks: oriel windows, exposed brick voussoirs, and buttressed, roughcast plastered walls. It is said that his heavy and robust architectural style was in keeping with his large physique.
The Legacy
From 1994 to 1996, the bungalow underwent restoration works. Original elements such as the timber balcony were retained, while original exposed bricks that had disintegrated over the years were skilfully replaced with similar bricks salvaged from the old outhouse. Overall, the project demonstrates sensitivity in the conservation of a heritage building.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
