About
This black and white bungalow was once the mess for unmarried staff of the trading house McAlister & Co., Ltd. to live and take their meals together. The architectural firm Swan & Maclaren was commissioned in 1920 to build it along with four other bungalows in the area.
The Building
Designed in the mock Tudor style and adapted for the tropical climate, the bungalow features broad roof eaves and timber louvres that help shade the house and keep the interiors cool and well-ventilated. It also features six Tuscan columns at the porte-cochère, lending it a sense of understated importance.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
