About
This row of ten townhouses (Nos. 22 to 40 (even numbers)) is the work of Westerhout and Oman, one of Singapore's leading architectural partnerships from 1923 to 1929.
The Building
Designed in the late-Edwardian Baroque style, their year of completion — 1928 — can be found on the pediment of the centre two townhouses.
Their most distinctive feature is the alternating fair-faced brickwork and plaster banding of the main columns. Otherwise known as "blood and bandage", this feature can also be found at the Central Fire Station, a national monument along Hill Street.
The Legacy
In 1994, the quality restoration of these townhouses was recognised with a Good Effort Award — the forerunner of today's Architectural Heritage Awards.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
