About
Kreta Ayer means "water cart" in Malay. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, water was drawn from wells located at Ann Siang Hill and nearby Spring Street, and transported via bullock carts to the surrounding areas.
The History
Many Singaporeans would remember the four shophouses at 13–19 Kreta Ayer Road as the former premises of the Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association (SATA) Chinatown Clinic from 1996 to 2009.
The Legacy
After the clinic vacated the premises, this development consisting of six pre-war shophouses (Nos. 9 to 19 (odd numbers)) underwent restoration works, which also saw the reinstatement of half-length doors, known as pintu pagar, at the ground floor façades. It is interesting to note that despite its Malay name, the pintu pagar is actually a traditional architectural feature imported from southern China.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
