Amber Road No. 43 Conservation Area
Historic address: 43 Amber Road
About
This pre-war bungalow once fronted the sea before the shoreline was reclaimed between 1966 and 1970. It was one of many properties owned by the prominent Elias family, and is unique for its stained glass panels depicting a Middle Eastern scene, which point to the Baghdadi Jewish origins of the family.
The Building
Besides the stained glass panels, original features such as the timber staircase and timber-panelled interior walls of the second-storey lounge help to retain the old-world charm of this grand dame.
The Legacy
In adapting the bungalow into a clubhouse, special effort was made to retain and restore most of its original features.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
