About
This 1928 Art Deco style building (Nos. 16 to 21) once belonged to Ho Sok Choo Neo, a wealthy Peranakan landowner. It used to house printing and bookbinding businesses on the ground level with residences above. Together with the adjacent shophouses, they were built on land once owned by philanthropist and Justice of the Peace Cheang Hong Lim, after whom Hong Lim Park is named.
The Legacy
During the restoration of the buildings, the taller building was found to be in poor structural condition, which necessitated the replacement of its reinforced concrete frame, while the missing tiled canopies of the adjacent shophouses were reinstated. The rejuvenated buildings still continue to serve as residences at the upper levels.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
