About
This Spanish Mission Revival style building was designed by Frank Brewer in 1939 and is said to be his finest and largest completed work in Singapore.
The Building
It features a large quadrangle surrounded by colonnaded corridors, distinctive fish-scale stucco textured walls and the six-storey Lim Teck Kin Tower that was added in 1952. Restoration works undertaken between 2002 and 2005 benefitted from the wealth of archival records available and special effort was taken to maintain the original spirit of the former school building. This included the retention of the concrete line, running down the centre of the tiled corridors, that was used to organise students into queues.
The Legacy
After receiving the Architectural Heritage Award in 2006, the restoration project was further recognised with an Honourable Mention in the 2007 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
