About

Visitors to Sembawang Park will be familiar with Beaulieu House. Located on a raised ground sloping down towards the beach and jetty, this handsome bungalow commands an expansive view of the Straits of Johor.

The History

Dating from the 1910s, it was originally a seaside bungalow belonging to a plantation owner. It was later designated for military use when the Sembawang Naval Base was developed nearby in the 1920s to 1940s. The bungalow was also the residence of Admiral Beaulieu, the Chief of Staff of the Royal Navy. A large portion of today’s Sembawang Park was once his garden estate.

The Building

The single-storey bungalow is built in the Neo-Classical style with elegant ornamentation and detailing in plaster. The central portico features a prominent roof resting on simple columns, creating a grand impression for the entrance. The rooftop patio is framed with ornate cast-iron balustrades, creating a befitting crown for the bungalow. A verandah with intricate cast-iron railing runs along the entire front of the original bungalow. The interior retains many original decorative details as well as colourful Staffordshire floor tiles which are typical of the period.

The Legacy

Beaulieu House is an elegant building that is part of our colonial heritage and given its prominent vantage point, it has become a well-known seafront landmark in historic Sembawang Park.

Guidelines and Procedures

All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.

Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
