About
This former barracks was part of the extensive military facilities built on the island by the British from the latter half of the 19th century onwards. Then known as Pulau Blakang Mati, the island's name was changed in 1972 to Sentosa which means tranquil in Malay.
The Building
In the early 2000s, the building underwent major restoration which included the replacement of damaged timber structural members and tiles of the roof, and reconfiguration of the interior for a luxury spa.
The Legacy
Given conservation status in 2004, the successful adaptive reuse of the former barracks demonstrates how new uses can capitalise on the charm of heritage buildings.
