Olson Building Of The Former Methodist Girls' School
About
Block 11A, formerly known as Olson Building, is the oldest building remaining on the former Methodist Girls' School (MGS) site at Mount Sophia. It was erected in 1928 to house six classrooms.
The Building
The two-storey building is characterised by a high-pitched tiled roof. Its architecture resembles the former ACS Building by Frank Brewer, with orderly window openings and clay-tiled canopies at the first storey that are well-suited to the tropical climate, though this building is much simpler in scale and design, befitting the humble beginnings of the school.
Visual interest is provided by architectural features such as window transoms with moulded concrete lattices and concrete-louvred vents beneath the window sills. These features blend harmoniously with the pared-down aesthetic of the building while also serving a climatic function by allowing cross-ventilation and creating a cooling effect. A meticulous eye for detail and proportion is also evident in the masonry corbels supporting the first storey canopies, which are carved in an elegant geometric design.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
