About
This pre-war Anglo-Malay style bungalow, supported on piers above the ground as a guard against flooding, follows the basic Malay house plan: a serambi (veranda) in front, followed by the rumah ibu (house core), and the dapur (kitchen) at the rear.
The History
The owners volunteered to conserve and restore this bungalow in 2009 as a lasting tribute to their grandfather and as a memento of their childhood.
The Legacy
In the restoration of the house, effort was made to retain most of its original fabric. Its traditional character was further enhanced through the installation of intricately carved timber window screens and a half-length timber door known as a pintu pagar at the first storey. These features are traditional provisions that allow residents to open the windows and main door while still maintaining privacy.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
