About
These six shophouses at 299–309 (odd numbers) Joo Chiat Road were built as one development together with the six adjacent shophouses at 287–297 Joo Chiat Road. The year of construction — 1928 — is inscribed on the pediment of the corner shophouse at 287 Joo Chiat Road.
The History
The shophouses housed a variety of commercial uses before being adapted for use as a hotel in the mid-1990s, among them furniture retail shops and a laundry service.
The Building
The shophouses are designed in the highly decorative Rococo style, featuring extensive plasterwork and timber fretwork fascia boards.
The Legacy
While the shophouse interiors were sensitively reconfigured and their structures strengthened for hotel use, their exteriors have been carefully restored to their former glory.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
