Historic address: 98 Joo Chiat Place

About
This development comprises six shophouses at 92–102 (even numbers) Joo Chiat Place, dating from the early 20th century, a period that saw the surrounding rural area transform into a suburban enclave.
The History
This area was once a coconut plantation owned by the wealthy Hokkien landowner and philanthropist Chew Joo Chiat (1857–1926).
The Building
The first storey of each shophouse is characterised by a façade comprising a double door flanked by casement windows on either side — a common configuration in shophouses used to accommodate single families.
The Legacy
Today, the shophouses continue to serve as residences where, behind each charming façade, the interiors have been refurbished into comfortable homes for modern-day living.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
