About
This house and the neighbouring terrace houses from 8 to 16 Emerald Hill Road were built for the developer Phua Poh Khim in 1911 by Tan Seng Chong, the first Chinese to start his own architectural practice in Singapore. The 1st storey was once a provision shop - Chop Kim Hoe - operated by the Chua family who lived upstairs.
In the restoration of this house, effort was made to retain most of its original fabric. Its traditional character was also enhanced through the installation of intricately carved timber window screens as well as a half-length timber door, known as pintu pagar at the 1st storey. These features are traditional provisions which allow the resident to open the windows and main door, and still maintain privacy.
