About
This house and the neighbouring terrace houses from 64 to 74 Emerald Hill Road were developed by Puey Soo Keng in 1916. They were designed by Johannes Bartholomew (Birch) Westerhout (1871 - 1937), a prominent Eurasian who was appointed Municipal Commissioner from 1929 to 1934 and Justice of the Peace in 1935.
Like many houses in Emerald Hill, the design of this house is eclectic. European Classicism as seen in the dentils and pilasters come together with other architectural features steeped in Chinese symbolism. The depiction of a bat (蝠) like in the bat-shaped vents above the 1st storey windows is a visual pun for good fortune (福) because both Chinese characters for bat and good fortune are pronounced as fu.
