Ellison Building
About
The prominent two-storey Ellison Building, built in 1924, stands at the junction of Selegie Road and Bukit Timah Road, marking the end of the signature streetscape of Selegie Road. Selegie Road is characterised by a row of pre-war shophouses of varying façades and heights, giving a distinctive character to this important trunk road leading out of the City Centre towards the Kandang Kerbau/Serangoon Road area.
The History
The central pediment of the Ellison Building carries the name of its original Jewish owner, a Star of David, and its year of construction — standing as a piece of historical evidence of Singapore's pre-war Jewish urban community in the Mt Sophia/Selegie area.
The Building
A key characteristic of the Ellison Building is its curved façades and a pair of unique cupolas, one at each end of the block. This sensitive treatment of its corners forms a striking termination of views down Selegie and Bukit Timah/Serangoon Roads, demonstrating how good urban design can contribute positively to the street and create a unique sense of place.
The Legacy
The area was accorded conservation status on 5 December 2008.
