About
This pre-war terrace house is located along Martaban Road, named in 1929 after the Burmese town of Martaban (now known as Mottama), a town in Mon State, Myanmar. Most roads in the vicinity were already named after other Burmese localities at the time.
The History
Prior to its restoration, the house was used as a dormitory for orderlies from the nearby Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The Legacy
In transforming the building into a modern family home, close attention was paid to respecting its historical integrity so that its innate charm could be maintained. Most of the house's original fabric, including its timber roof rafters and timber floorboards, were retained and restored.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
