The single-storey terraced units at Nos. 601–639 Balestier Road are a typical built form once found in many parts of pre-1965 Singapore, especially in suburban and rural areas. This row is a key landmark marking the entrance to Balestier Road from Thomson Road.
The History
Built by early developers of newly settled areas for sale as shops and homes for new settlers, most such units have since made way for more modern and higher buildings that make more efficient use of land.
The Building
Although simple in form, the units feature Art Deco pediments above the five-footway, lending them a more substantial appearance.
