About
Located just north of the Downtown Core, the area consists of buildings lining Purvis Street, Liang Seah Street, Tan Quee Lan Street and North Bridge Road. It contains two- to four-storey shophouses of the Art Deco and Neo-Classical styles.
The History
The area was once designated the European town during the time of Raffles.
The Architecture
The area contains shophouse buildings built between the 1920s and 1940s. Nos. 516 and 496 North Bridge Road were built in 1929 and 1927 respectively and are mirror-images of each other in their Neo-Classically influenced façades. Together they create a landmark gateway into Liang Seah Street, giving a strong definition to the urban street edge. Nos. 490, 492 and 494 North Bridge Road were built in the 1930s or 1940s, with strong Art Deco aesthetics and distinctive high pediment façades.
The Legacy
The area received conservation status on 25 October 1991, with the North Bridge Road buildings further gazetted on 27 May 2009, recognising the area's architectural and historical significance.

[1] The conservation guidelines for shophouses and bungalows will generally be applied by URA in the consideration of a development application. However, if the circumstances or planning considerations relevant to a case warrant it, URA may in its discretion decide to depart from these general guidelines. The guidelines, principles and illustrations found in the guidelines are not exhaustive in covering all possible site conditions and variations in building type. Persons intending to carry out a development are advised to take this into consideration and check with URA through enquiries or development applications to confirm if their proposals can be allowed.
