About
Read Bridge was built in 1889 to replace Merchant Bridge, at the initiative of a famous businessman, William Henry Read, a Scotsman who came to Singapore in 1841. He was the first non-government member of parliament in colonial Singapore to make notable contributions to public service.
The Building
Read Bridge is a plain concrete bridge with little decorative ornamentation.
The Legacy
Read Bridge was given conservation status on 3 December 2009.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Any proposed additions and alterations to this conserved structure are subject to evaluation. Please submit your proposal for URA's review.
