The History
Jurong Hill Tower built by JTC in 1969, at the peak of Jurong Hill Park as part of Jurong Industrial Estate was intended as a recreational and nature spot amidst the rapid urbanization in the area.
Offering panoramic 360-views of Jurong, the Tower was an ideal observatory platform for visitors to witness the realisation and progress of our industrialisation programme. Foreign heads of state and dignitaries also planted trees in the Garden of Fame at the foot of the Tower to commemorate their visits.
The Tower represents Singapore’s economic transformation after attaining independence as a nation, and symbolises Singapore’s close international ties and collaboration with foreign investors.
Today the hilltop road and Tower are popular destinations for recreational cyclists.
The Building
The circular observatory deck at the top doubles up as a function room. At the base, a fan shaped volume previously housed a 200-seater capacity restaurant.
With the exterior façade and interior floors and walls cladded with greyish themed tiles, the Tower continues to stand out as a notable landmark in Jurong.
The Legacy
The Tower is being studied for future adaptive reuse as part of the overall development plans for Jurong Hill Park together with the former Jurong Bird Park site to capitalise on the future Jurong Hill MRT station scheduled to be completed in 2029 as part of the Jurong Region Line.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Any proposed additions and alterations to this conserved structure are subject to evaluation. Please submit your proposal for URA's review.
