Rex Cinemas

About
Rex Cinemas is located on MacKenzie Road, just behind the Ellison Building. It was one of Singapore's many famous cinemas, and the building and its name became a point of reference for the public, greatly associated with the area.
The Building
Rex Cinemas was built in the 1940s in a simplified Art Deco style, comprising a front building and a functional theatre hall behind. Although the façade has undergone cosmetic alterations over the past decade, the building still relates well in scale to the conserved shophouses across the road.
Guidelines and Procedures
All proposed works will need to comply with the Conservation Guidelines and the Specific Restoration Guidelines (SRG). Conservation Permission is required before all additions & alteration works and operations of new use can begin.
Residential Fronts are characterised by timber casement windows flanking a double-leafed timber door. All buildings with residential front which is existing and/or identified in the 'Specific Restoration Guidelines', regardless of land use zoning, shall be retained and restored.
Any proposed additions and alterations to this conserved building are subject to evaluation. Please submit your proposal for URA’s review.
