Background
The 13,000sqm site is located along Marina Boulevard, directly above the Marina Bay Link Mall and between the Marina Bay Financial Centre and The Sail@Marina Bay. Linked seamlessly to the nearby Raffles Place MRT, the Lawn will also be served by the Downtown station on the Downtown Line 1 from Dec 2013.
With lush green lawns lined with park benches, the urban park is currently a green oasis for office workers, visitors and residents. It is also a venue for both public and private outdoor events such as kite-flying and picnics.
Challenge
Introduce public amenities and short-term uses that can enliven The Lawn to be a gathering place for the community
By introducing interesting short-term uses and amenities, you can turn the lawn into a vibrant space that draws people and encourage interaction on a whole new level. You can also suggest introducing furniture or other lightweight structures on the pavements to address the needs of diverse user groups.
Proposed events and activities should consider Marina Bay’s positioning as as a sustainable live-work-play district.
Key Considerations:
- Singapore’s tropical climate;
- Limited access to power, water and sewerage facilities, as well as services (e.g. refuse collection and delivery);
- Likely restrictions on noise and operating hours given the proximity to residential developments as well as offices; and
- Structures are not possible on the turfed area though there is provision for set-up of temporary structures on the paved areas.
