Get active at Car-Free Sunday SG in July

  Published: 25 July 2017

Car-Free Sunday SG will be back this Sunday, 30 July. Join us for an exciting line-up of programmes that promises an invigorating and fun experience for all ages and interests.

GetActive! Singapore festivities

Participants can look forward to an action-packed morning as GetActive! Singapore returns for a second time to Car-Free Sunday SG. Ms Grace Fu, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth will launch a series of sporting activities that everyone can enjoy.

Kicking off the day is a mass workout to celebrate Singapore’s 52nd birthday. Following the workout, participants can embark on a 5.2km Nila Walk/Run through the car-free streets starting from the Civic District to Telok Ayer conservation area.

There will be non-stop fun all around Padang for everyone to experience. Enjoy a full suite of health and fitness activities organised by local communities and interest groups. Participants can get tips on health and wellness at a special Active Health Capsule exhibition that promotes self-awareness and healthy habits.

Trails and exhibitions

With streets closed to traffic, Car-Free Sunday SG participants have had the opportunity to rediscover and appreciate our city through various walking tours at different districts, such as the Civic District Tree Trail and Pioneer Trail along Ann Siang Hill/Telok Ayer Green. Adding to these trails is a series of free guided public art walking tours put together by the Public Art Trust this Sunday. Enjoy a morning of culture and discovery, and learn about the stories behind the public artworks on display around the city.

At the Asian Civilisations Museum, participants can go on an educational tour of marine-themed exhibition. Marine animals created from the ocean debris such as fishing nets and recycled plastics will be on display, to drive awareness of ocean pollution, recycling and conservation of the marine environment.

Exploring Telok Ayer

An array of activities awaits participants in Telok Ayer conservation area. Participants can indulge in a free outdoor yoga session at Telok Ayer Square. Over at Telok Ayer Green, seniors 65 years old and above can join in a community charity project to learn more about two of Singapore’s national monuments – Singapore Yu Huang Gong (the former Keng Teck Whay Building) and Nagore Dargah Indian Muslim Heritage Centre – and participate in exercises to help them keep fit.

While exploring the area, participants can also fill their tummies at cafés that will be opened earlier from 8.00am onwards specially for participants of Car-Free Sunday SG.

Riding made easy

Trishaws will be available to take participants through the car-free route. Cycling Without Age and other volunteers will provide rides for the public, particularly the elderly, to enable them to enjoy the beautiful sights of the Civic District and our city skyline. Participants can also choose to operate the trishaws to take their elderly family members or friends around the Civic District Loop.

Registration for the trishaw service will be between 8.45am and 11.00am on Sunday at the trishaw booth in front of National Gallery Singapore, along St Andrew’s Road. Each registration will be for a 15-minute block, and will be on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition, bike share companies Mobike, oBike and ofo will offer free bicycle rentals to Car-Free Sunday SG participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Each company will be offering 10 to 15 bicycles to the public for use in 30-minute blocks.

Refer to Annex A [PDF, 458kb] for more details on the activities and Annex B [PDF, 367kb] for road closure hours and road closure map. Members of the public are encouraged to take public transport or cycle to the event venue. Refer to Annex C [PDF, 1.5MB] for cycling access points to the Padang.
