Get Active at the July edition of Car-Free Sunday SG (Factsheet)

  Published: 27 July 2016

Come and experience a car-free city this Sunday, 31 July, and take part in the last edition of the six-month pilot of Car-Free Sunday SG. Held every last Sunday of the month, Car-Free Sunday SG is an initiative in which roads within the Civic District and parts of the Central Business District (CBD) are closed to traffic, transforming the area into a walkable, cyclist-friendly, and activity-filled precinct for families and friends.

Since the launch of the first edition of Car-Free Sunday SG on 28 February this year, thousands of people have participated in the event as well as various supporting programmes and activities. Car-Free Sunday SG has shown the possibilities of how the city can be transformed to create temporary public spaces and the benefits of going car-free.

Given the positive response from the public, Car-Free Sunday SG will be extended for a second run, starting in October. More details will be provided nearer the date.  In the meantime, the public is welcome to give their feedback and suggestions on the initiative via http://ura.sg/carfreesundaysg.

Launch of GetActive! Singapore – Celebrating Singapore’s National Day through sport

This Sunday, SportsSG will be launching GetActive! Singapore in conjunction with Car-Free Sunday SG. GetActive! Singapore is a week-long sporting bash, designed to have all celebrating National Day together as One Team Singapore – through sport. There will be a host of different activities for everyone to enjoy – from a mass workout in front of National Gallery Singapore, to the SGT Ken® Super Boot Camp Series on the Empress Lawn, to Bubble Soccer on the Padang.

There will also be a Sports Carnival at the Padang held to celebrate Singapore’s 51st National Day. This will include an attempt to set a Singapore Book of Records for a unified dance routine which aims to encourage children to embrace friendship and create family bonding opportunities.

Come down this Sunday to join Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Ms Grace Fu who will flag off the event at 8.00am. Roads will continue to be closed from 7.30am.

To promote the car-lite spirit, cyclists and personal mobility device users are encouraged to dress up their “rides” based on the theme of “Let’s go car-lite”. The Land Transport Authority and Urban Redevelopment Authority will be running a “Decorate your Rides” contest with prizes to be won, including goodie bags and shopping vouchers. Just upload the best shot of you and your decorated ride onto the Facebook event page at http://bit.ly/carfreesundayjuly with the hashtag #CarFreeSundaySG, or get spotted by our roving staff during the event.
