Car-Free Sunday SG returns with enhanced route and new activities (Factsheet)

  Published: 27 March 2016

Car-Free Sunday SG will be back again for its second run on 27 March 2016. Following the successful launch of Car-Free Sunday SG on 28 February 2016, roads within the Civic District and parts of the Central Business District (CBD) will again be closed to traffic and the area transformed into a walkable, cyclist-friendly, and activity-filled precinct for families and friends on Sunday, 27 March 2016. With the roads free of cars, the streets will be given over to walkers, joggers and cyclists while the adjacent spaces will host family-friendly activities as well as sports and fitness sessions.

In this upcoming edition of Car-Free Sunday SG, the community can look forward to an even better experience with enhancements made to the duration of road closure, as well as the walking, running and cycling route. There will also be new activities, both indoors and outdoors, that participants can enjoy.

Changes to duration and route of road closure

The duration of road closure and walking, running and cycling route have been extended, in response to public feedback.

Roads will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at a later time and over a longer duration, from 7.30am to 10.00am (instead of 7.00am to 9.00am). The walking, running and cycling route will now include Esplanade Drive, forming a 5 kilometre car-free stretch – comprising St Andrew’s Road, Stamford Road, Esplanade Drive, Fullerton Road, Shenton Way and Robinson Road.

The walking, running and cycling route comprises the Civic District and CBD loops:

  • The loop within the Civic District (St Andrew’s Road, Stamford Road and Esplanade Drive) will be closed to traffic and available for the public to use from 7.30am to 12noon; and
  • The loop in the CBD (Shenton Way, Robinson Road and Fullerton Road) will have some lanes closed and made available for the public to use from 7.30am to 10.00am.

Connaught Drive will be closed from 7.30am to 7.00pm to host a variety of community sporting events and activities. See table below for details of road closures and Annex A [PDF, 143kb] for the road closure map.

New Activities

Like the inaugural Car-Free Sunday SG on 28 February 2016, there will be a host of community-centric and family-friendly activities this Sunday, 27 March 2016 for the public to enjoy the public spaces in the Civic District. In addition, this edition will offer many new activities, including:

Arts and Gardening Bazaar at Esplanade Park; 8.00am to 6.00pm
At NParks’ Arts and Gardening Bazaar, you can look forward to a wide variety of delicately crafted artisan as well as gardening-related items for sale.

Live Out Loud at Esplanade Park; 3.00pm to 6.00pm

Sports activities by ActiveSG
Running enthusiasts can gain insights into how to put their best foot forward with running tips at an ActiveSG running clinic led by Run and Fitness Coach and ultra marathoner Liew Wei Yong. Suitable for anyone of any sporting ability, participants will understand how to train for their runs efficiently and have their questions and concerns addressed.

Non-running enthusiasts can bring along friends and family to engage in a game of Frisbee or pit their skills against each other with a friendly game of three-aside hockey. One can also try their hand at functional fitness exercises – designed to train muscles to work together by simulating common movements that we do in our daily lives.

Street Performances and Guided Tours
There will be street performances at Esplanade Park, Connaught Drive and Empress Place from 9am onwards.

The Asian Civilisations Museum and Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall will open earlier at 9.00am for visitors to enjoy the various exhibitions and galleries on Asian art and culture. Families can also join in the Monument Trail, a guided tour to know more about historical landmarks as well as heritage and other interesting trees within the Civic District.

Refer to Annex B [PDF, 471kb] for the full list of activities at the second edition of Car-Free Sunday SG on 27 March 2016.

Members of the public are encouraged to take public transport or cycle to the event venue. Participants can bring their own bicycles or rent one from Car-Free Sunday SG’s partner bicycle rental companies beforehand via http://ura.sg/carfreesundaysg and collect the bicycles on site that morning.

The public will be able to use different forms of personal mobility devices including motorised ones such as hoverboards. To ensure a pleasant experience for all, participants are reminded to be considerate towards other users while using the shared spaces at Car-Free Sunday SG.
