Come for Car-Free Sunday SG on 24 April 2016 (Factsheet)

  Published: 20 April 2016

From children to the elderly, fitness buffs to cultural enthusiasts, there is something for everyone at Car-Free Sunday SG! This coming Sunday, 24 April 2016, roads within the Civic District and parts of the Central Business District (CBD) will again be closed to traffic to transform the area into a walkable, cyclist-friendly, and activity-filled precinct for families and friends.

Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Social and Family Development and Chairman of the Active Mobility Advisory Panel, will launch the Safe Riders Campaign before the start of the event to promote the importance of responsible sharing of spaces so that different path users can enjoy a more pleasant travelling experience.

What’s in store

Besides walking, jogging or cycling around the 5km car-free route, the community can look forward to a wide array of family-friendly activities and events. Cyclists and users of Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs) are invited to pledge their commitment to be Safe Riders and to practise the seven habits of safe riding. They can also test out their safe riding skills at LTA’s Safe Riding Clinic.

There are also new activities happening in the Civic District, including the RHB Singapore Cup Football Carnival, Lindy Hop performance and lesson, pebble-painting activity, ActiveSG Kids Obstacles Fun Race, free performances at Victoria Concert Hall and guided tours of National Gallery.

Please refer to Annex A [PDF, 395kb] for the full list of activities at the third edition of Car-Free Sunday SG.

Information on road closure

The duration of road closure and the walking, jogging and cycling route have been extended since the last edition on 27 March 2016 to allow the community to enjoy the car-free streets and public spaces for a longer period of time.

The loop within the Civic District (St Andrew’s Road, Stamford Road and Esplanade Drive) will be closed to traffic from 7.30am to 12noon, and the loop in the CBD (Shenton Way, Robinson Road and Fullerton Road) will have lanes closed from 7.30am to 10.00am. Together, these create a 5km-long car-free route for the public to enjoy and engage in activities.

Connaught Drive will be closed from 7.30am to 7.00pm to host a variety of community sporting events and activities. See table below for details of road closures and Annex B [PDF, 142kb] for the road closure map.
