Winning ideas unveiled for forgotten public spaces

About PubliCity

PubliCity is an initiative that aims to involve the community to celebrate good public spaces and to enliven public spaces through good design and programmes. Public spaces are important components of our living environment. The creation and development of well-designed public spaces provide areas for people to gather for social activities and serve as leisure and recreational spaces. As part of urban planning and design, public spaces are carefully planned and distributed across the island. PubliCity strives to create both new public spaces as well as rejuvenate existing ones.

An ecological corridor for birds under an MRT track, a giant slide down Mount Faber and an art installation along the East Coast Park shoreline – these are among the 17 creative ideas that were unveiled by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) at the launch of the “My Ideas for Public Spaces” exhibition and award ceremony today. Among these ideas, there are eight winners, eight merit awards and one special mention. The awardees will receive $1,000 cash, $200 worth of book vouchers and $100 worth of book vouchers respectively.

The competition, which garnered 158 entries, aims to inspire people to transform forgotten spaces into something more meaningful. Architects, designers and even pre-schoolers submitted refreshing ideas to enhance underused or overlooked public spaces.

“This competition is a fun way to involve the community in thinking about the spaces around them. We are pleased with the enthusiastic participation. 204 people across different ages submitted a range of creative ideas, including an entry by a group of pre-schoolers. This shows that everyone can get involved in urban planning,” said Mr Ng Lang, Chief Executive Officer of URA.

“My Ideas for Public Spaces” competition took place from 14 May 2015 to 3 July 2015, as part of the PubliCity initiative. URA invited the public to submit creative ideas for underused or overlooked pockets of public spaces in our city. These ideas will serve as inspiration for future projects on activating public spaces. Refer to Annex A [PDF, 917kb] for details on the 17 awarded entries and respective jury citation.

The assessment criteria and list of jury panel members can be found in Annex B [PDF, 84kb].

The “My Ideas for Public Spaces” exhibition is held at the URA Centre Atrium, 45 Maxwell Road Singapore 069118 from 19 November to 16 December 2015.
