Space under viaduct is to promote street art

URA and NAC's reply, 14 Nov 2015

Independent street art space at the Rail Corridor

We refer to Mr Joe Tan’s letter “Vandalism or work of art” (12 Nov).

The space under the Commonwealth Avenue viaduct structure is an independent street art space introduced in 2013. This is a partnership between the Urban Redevelopment Authority and National Arts Council (NAC) to inject more vibrancy and community involvement into the Rail Corridor, and provide a more unique experience for users of the Corridor. This is also part of NAC’s efforts to promote Singapore’s vibrant street art scene, by allowing the street art community physical and artistic room to express themselves and practise their craft.

The results have been very encouraging, with the space regularly used by street artists. NAC has also commissioned three very well-received events at the space so far. Another event titled Rail Jammin will be held today, where local and international street artists will come together to celebrate their collaborations with the public.

Vandalism or work of art?

I came across this "artwork" near Buona Vista MRT station.

It's under the road at the Junction of South Buona Vista Road and Commonwealth Avenue West.

There are more drawings, actually, is this artwork or the work of vandals?

Joe Tan E. H.
