A pedestrian-friendly Holland Village in the works

We thank Ms Quek Li Lian for her letter ("Wish list for Holland Village"; Forum Online, last Wednesday).

Holland Village has a unique charm and distinctive low-rise urban village atmosphere. Our plans for the Holland Village Extension will build on its unique character and address current issues in the area, such as the shortage of parking and insufficient public spaces.

We will extend the existing streets through the new development site to create a pedestrian-friendly, car-free zone that will double as public spaces to support a vibrant streetscape.

There will also be design guidelines to ensure that future developments are scaled to respect the existing low-rise buildings in Holland Village.

The future mixed-use development will incorporate a large underground carpark to meet motorists' needs and there will also be road improvements in the area.

However, we hope that visitors to the area will make greater use of public transport since the Holland Village Circle Line station is located right at the entrance to the village.

Residents can look forward to a new 1.4ha community park in the HDB neighbourhood and will be able to give their feedback on the design and facilities in the park.

Wish list for Holland Village

Having lived in the Holland Village vicinity since the mid-70s, I would like to share my "wish list" to meet the residents' needs and build on the existing ambience of this unique location ("Holland Village mall: Parking, rents among top worries"; last Thursday).

Many  have  articulated  the  need  for  more  carparks.  It  would  also  be  ideal  to  have  more green areas for exercise as well as communal activities catering to all ages.

It would also be great if we could expand on the existing shophouses to enlarge the existing Holland Village rather than build a large shopping mall.

In short, we should try to retain the area's village atmosphere.

My ideal Holland Village would therefore have:

  • Underground  carparks  sufficient  for  both  residents  and  businesses,  each  with  separate entrances.
  • One or two levels of underground shops and even a small cinema, if there is enough space for it.
  • At ground level, there would be a mixture of two- to four-storey buildings. These low-rise buildings would be a combination of apartments and ground-floor shops, all connected by covered walkways.
  • The  rooftops  of  these  buildings  would  be  connected,  and  areas  rented  out  for  communal gardens or farms.
  • A  "Central  Park"  for  all  to  enjoy.  If  space  allows,  this  park  could  also  have  an  air-conditioned function hall with cooking facilities to be rented out for celebrations (especially weddings), promotions/events and small concerts.

A  development  like  this  would  integrate  the  existing  shophouses,  generate  even  more community life and maintain Holland Village as a popular attraction.
