South Indian Muslims in Singapore and Malaysia
The URA Conservation Department co-hosted this talk with the support of Indian Heritage Centre (IHC) on 10th October 2015 at the URA Centre Function Hall. This is our inaugural event in partnership with the IHC. The talk was given by Ms Khoo Salma Nasution and two Singapore community leaders, Mr Naseer Ghani and Mr Mohd Nasim. Ms Khoo Salma traced the origins of the South Indian Muslims and how they arrived at Southeast Asia. She touched on the community, the types of job they took on and the Waqf properties in Penang. The Waqf properties were used for mosques, burial grounds, water supply, education and feasts and family trusts – and how this shaped the heritage landscape of Georgetown. Majority of the Indian Muslims in the Straits Settlement came from Malabar (Kerala) and Tamil Nadu. She also shared on the connections between Penang and Singapore. Mr Naseer Ghani who spoke about the community as a whole and the trades they dealt in, such as the Mama shops that we are familiar with. The other community leader, Mr Mohd Nasim, touched largely on Indian Muslim mosques such as the recently gazetted Malabar Mosque and the Al-Abrar Mosque along Telok Ayer Street. Did you know, Kadayanallur Street by the URA Centre was named after the community from Tamil Nadu, who had set up the Umar Pulavar Tamil High School - located where URA now stands? It was the only Tamil language high school in South-East Asia!
