The Man Behind "Majulah Singapura"

Mr Zubir Said is commonly known for being the composer of Singapore's National Anthem "Majulah Singapura". Born in Bukittinggi, Indonesia, his father was the Chieftain of the village and as a tradition, Mr Zubir was required to take over the position. However, Mr Zubir did not like the village life and wanted to pursue his interest in music, which was seen as a taboo to his father. Eventually, Mr Zubir made his way to Singapore and began his career in music. He started out doing odd jobs at recording studios before working for film companies such as Cathay-Keris. He eventually received an invitation from the City Council to compose a song to commemorate the re-opening of the Victoria Memorial Hall in 1958, he named the song "Majulah Singapura".

This video is a collaboration between URA and CHIJ Katong to encourage our youth to better understand and share the awareness of our built heritage.
