ABOUT

This Modern church is located along Queensway, facing Commonwealth Drive.

THE HISTORY

The church was officially opened in 1965, complementing Queenstown's expansion as Singapore's first satellite town.

THE BUILDING

The building was designed by Y. G. Dowsett. Its most iconic feature is the dramatically structured slate roof, constructed in folds in the shape of a tent meant to symbolize the “tent of meeting” in the Old Testament of the Bible. The roof dips downwards to wrap the interior with portions touching the ground, reminiscent of anchoring pegs. Functionally, these also serve as drainage points for rainwater.

Featuring prominently in its architecture is the symbol of the cross – the plan of the main service hall is designed in a cruciform shape and the exterior brick-faced wall of the main altar has a Celtic cross. The three main entrances are topped with large triangular concrete grids comprising rectilinear inserts of multi-coloured glass ventilation panels, making the entrances remarkably vibrant when viewed from the inside of the hall.

The interior of the main sanctuary is articulated by light shining through strips of glass panels cleverly inserted at the junctures of the roof panels, creating a dramatic play of light and shadows. Also of note are the original pendant fluorescent lamps with expressive angular timber fins.

The structural complexity in the design and detailing of this unique building is fully complemented by its high level of craftsmanship.

THE LEGACY

Fondly known by visitors and residents as the “origami church”, it stands as a signature religious landmark along Queensway, forming one of the most outstanding corners in the neighbourhood.

Gazetted on 25 November 2005 for conservation.
