The Downtown at Marina Bay Appendix 2.2

The Downtown at Marina Bay will be Singapore's key focus of development in the next 15 to 20 years.

DEVELOPMENT IN PROGRESS

Development of the area has already started to take place. One Marina Boulevard (OMB), a new waterfront commercial development is nearing completion. Another major commercial development at One Raffles Quay (ORQ) is slated to be completed in 2007. Development of a predominantly residential project on a site sold in 2002 will be commencing soon. A fourth site along Marina Boulevard is currently being planned as a Business and Financial Centre (BFC).

VIBRANT AND EXCITING WATERFRONT

Two major public attractions - the new Merlion Pier and the Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay - as well as the entertainment and dining facilities at One Fullerton have been successful in drawing crowds to the waterfront. Another future attraction, the Singapore Flyer - which will be the world's tallest observation wheel at 178 metre (m) high - is currently in the planning stages.

To build up the critical mass of attractions, and form a continuous 'loop' of activities along the waterfront the tow promontory sites are set aside for major public attractions that will be distinctive landmarks.

The high-density, high-rise commercial and residential developments will also be complimented by a series of low-density, low-rise developments for food and beverage, recreation and lifestyle-related uses to build up a critical mass of development early and create a unique set of amenities for visitors and people working and living within the area.

The attractions and facilities along the waterfront will be linked by a continuous pedestrian promenade.

MARINA BAY

The 48 ha waterbody of Marina Bay is strategically located at the heart of the city with Singapore's modern CBD skyline serving as a dramatic backdrop. The size of the Bay and its calm water make it ideal as a natural stage of activities and events while its extensive foreshore can accommodate large crowds of spectators.

It has already been successfully used to stage events such as F1 Power Boat Grand Prix, outdoor concerts and dance parties, fireworks displays, arts and sculpture installations and outdoor movie screenings.

With the completion of the Marina Barrage in 2007/8, Marina Bay will have a stabilised water level with no tidal fluctuations making it suitable for staging water-based events and performances and international water-sport competitions as well as recreational activities, including pleasure boating, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, water skiing and wind surfing, in addition to the water taxis and pleasure cruises that ply the area today.
