2001Sep / OctTapping on the best ideas for city living

In the 2001 Concept Plan, a key proposal for the city centre is that the number of homes will increase four-fold from 30,000 today to 120,000 in the long term. There will still be a good mix of private and public housing in many neighborhoods in the city centre. And because the city centre does not have severe height constraints, housing can go higher than other parts of the island to optimise land use. Skyrise living will become an attractive option for those who chose to live in the city. And the story has already begun, at Duxton Plain, Tanjong Pagar Road area.

2000Mar / AprScaling new heights

PDF: 695KB. At 645 sq km, Singapore has very limited land with which to juggle the needs of our people and a growing economy. After setting aside land for the necessary infrastructure like airports, ports, sewage treatment plants and water catchments, URA planners are left with little more than 50 per cent of the land to use for homes, offices, factories, roads, parks and schools. Skyline has previously highlighted creative planning solutions like land reclamation and the co-location of compatible uses under one roof. In this issue, we look at another solution : high-rise, high-density developments.
