BRIDGE ACROSS HENDERSON ROAD

View of bridge during day time

This curvilinear structure is located 36m above Henderson Road and bridges Mount Faber Park and Telok Blangah Hill Park at a horizontal distance of 274m and vertical elevation of 20m (about 6-storey residential building). The design intent is to give the surface of the bridge a natural form and make use of natural material. It is made up of four (4) important ‘surfaces’ and expressed as different layers.

The first layer was generated from a mathematical formula to give the bridge its’ wave-form. Seven (7) undulating curved steel ribs alternately rose over and under the bridge deck. The second layer is the steel hollow section frame supports. Although ‘invisible’ to the eye, it is an important layer that helps the handicapped and elderly to climb 20m vertically without steps.

The third layer is the timber deck, curved balustrades, seats and alcoves that gives warmth, inherent characteristic, superior aesthetic and tactile qualities to the bridge. The fourth layer is the metal balustrade which provides protection for the user when the wave-form ‘dips’ under the bridge deck. The lightness and transparency of the material emphasizes the solid quality of the timber deck and balustrade and gives a vertical rhythm.

The rib structure appears as a sculptural artefact in the day and becomes a self-illuminated structure in the night. The lighting, which would help to inverse the light and shadow relationship on the rib structure during the night, would be switched on between 7pm and 11:30pm. The wave-form will be lit with orange LED light to blend in with the rustic environment.
