Come 2010, residents of Punggol and Sengkang will have more great spaces for relaxation and recreation at their doorsteps. This was revealed when the URA recently unveiled design proposals for a new 4.9 km waterfront promenade which will open up access to the breathtaking Punggol coast.

A breathtaking trio

The $13 million coastal walkway will have three segments, each with its own unique theme and attractions. For instance, the Punggol Point Walk will have a 0.6 ha park with a unique lotus pond forming the gateway to the waterfront. Nature lovers can enjoy leisurely strolls amidst the diverse variety of trees and plants at the second attraction called Nature Walk. A doubletiered promenade affording unblocked views of Sungei Serangoon will be the highlight of the third zone, the Riverside Walk.

LOOK Architects has been commissioned for the project, and construction will commence next year.

Seamless strolls by the sea

The promenade will be built to connect two proposed sports and recreational clusters at Punggol Point and along Sungei Serangoon. The promenade will also be linked to new park connectors planned by the National Parks Board along Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon.

Together, these will complete the entire waterfront promenade loop around Punggol from Sengkang Park to Punggol Park, providing a continuous walk along the Punggol coastline and creating new recreational opportunities at the waterfront for public enjoyment.

The vision unfolds

Punggol Point was identified by the URA in 2002 as part of the Parks and Waterbodies and Identity Plans to be one of the five coastal areas (together with Changi, Pasir Ris, Pulau Ubin and Coney Island) to be developed as recreational spots.

The plans aimed to introduce new activities and attractions that will not only enhance visitors’ experiences, but also preserve the unique laid-back and village-like appeal that these areas are well-known for. The proposed promenade thus brings us a step closer to realising the vision of making Punggol Point a truly enchanting and endearing destination.

The most recent proposals were exhibited at the Pasir Ris- Punggol GRC Kampong Family Day on 18 November 2007. Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence and MP for Pasir Ris- Punggol GRC, who graced the event, said, “The opening up of the waterfront will benefit the residents most…I myself can’t wait to enjoy all the new leisure facilities. Together, we can energise the area and help create a vibrant seaside town right here in Punggol.”

Thumbs up with more to come…

The waterfront promenade is indeed a highly-anticipated project among the residents. Mr Thomas Yong, a resident of Punggol, said, “I’m very excited as I believe this is the first boardwalk right within a residential town.” “Marvellous!” was one word which another resident, Mr Vincent Leong, had for the proposed facilities. “I’m really looking forward and hope for their implementation as soon as possible.”

In fact, there are other attractions planned for Punggol Point. These include a horse-riding centre and a restaurant development. At Sungei Serangoon, a new golf driving range is already being constructed. More attractions will be built when the remaining land parcels are successfully tendered out.
