Q1: What is the future use of the Rail Corridor?

  • The return of the Rail Corridor gives us a chance to comprehensively review and chart the development plans for the former railway lands and their surrounding areas. As part of our review, we will study the possibility of maintaining a continuous green link along the Rail Corridor without affecting the development potential of the lands.

Given that the Rail Corridor runs through many areas and there is widespread public interest on the future use of the former railway land, we will engage the public and interest groups for ideas and suggestions on how the land can be integrated with future developments to enhance our living environment.

We will exhibit the draft plans when ready and further invite the public to give their views on these plans.

Q2: What is the future use of the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station and Bukit Timah Railway Station?

  • In view of their deep historical significance and to protect physical reminders of our rich heritage, the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station has been preserved as a National Monument while the Bukit Timah Railway Station has been conserved.

We will be seeking feedback and ideas from the public on the future use of the conserved buildings as well as how the land can be integrated with future developments to enhance our living environment.

Q3: In the meantime before the future use is finalised, is the Rail Corridor accessible to the public?

  • From 9 January 2012, the public can enjoy free access to the Rail Corridor, with the exception of three sites along the Rail Corridor and the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station (TPRS).

The Singapore Land Authority (SLA) has identified three sites along the Rail Corridor and adjacent vacant state land for interim community use. These sites are near Jalan Hang Jebat, Ghim Moh Road and Kampong Bahru Flyover, and are cordoned off for improvement works. The sites will be progressively opened for interim community use from April 2012.

The Tanjong Pagar Railway Station will remain closed at this time to enable SLA to carry out maintenance works and structural inspection. Information on its re-opening will be provided to the public in due course.

The public are advised to exercise caution and be responsible for their own safety when accessing the Rail Corridor. They are also reminded not to litter or deface the railway structures.

For more information, do visit SLA’s website.

Q4: Will any of the tracks or structures be retained?

  • In view of their deep historical significance and to protect physical reminders of our rich heritage, the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station has been preserved as a National Monument and the Bukit Timah Railway Station has been kept as a conserved building. The railway platforms of both stations and the two significant steel bridges at Dunearn Road and Upper Bukit Timah Road (near Rail Mall) will be retained.  In addition, about 400 metres of tracks next to the platforms of both railway station buildings as well as those on the two bridges will also be retained.
