OFFICIAL OPENING OF ALBERT MALL

  1. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has completed the construction of Albert Mall. The mall was declared officially opened this evening by guests-of-honour Mr Lew Syn Pau, Member of Parliament for Kreta-Ayer-Tanglin GRC and Chairman of Government Parliamentary Committee (GPC) for National Development and Mr Loh Meng See, Member of Parliament for Kampong Glam and Chairman of GPC (Education).
  2. Some 100 guests, including community leaders and stakeholders of Albert Mall, attended the official opening.
  3. Albert Mall was designed and built by URA. Costing $5.5 million, the construction of the 700-m long mall commenced in November 1996 and was completed in May 1998.
  4. Design of Albert Mall

  5. Albert Mall was designed as a multi-purpose mall that not only facilitates walking in the area but can also support bustling commercial and community activities on special, festive occasions.
  6. There is a central piazza, strategically located at Albert and Waterloo Streets which is a conducive venue for stage performances and street bazaars.
  7. The stretch of the mall fronting the temples is designed like a garden to provide a place of relaxation for visitors and residents. The plazas outside the temples are intended to accommodate the occasional large crowds during festive celebrations while the mall in front of Stamford Arts Center support arts performances.
  8. The Vision

  9. Albert Mall is part of a broader plan by URA to provide a comprehensive pedestrian linkage from Little India to Marina Centre through Bugis Street and Suntec City. It is envisaged to be the main pedestrian link to the new entertainment area at Selegie/Bugis, the focal point of many exciting and colourful entertainment and leisure activities in the future.
  10. Activities on Albert Mall

  11. Since the completion of Albert Mall (Phase One) in August 1997, several activities such as bazaars and the Mooncake Festival last year, have been organised along the mall.

  12. With the entire mall fully completed, more exciting activities can be expected. The Singapore Tourism Board (STB), together with the grassroots organisations and the various stakeholders, is spearheading the promotion of Albert Mall as a venue for festive celebrations.
