New waterfront promenade and park at Punggol Point
The Urban Redevelopment Authority today unveiled the design proposals for a new waterfront promenade and park at Punggol Point. The new infrastructure is part of its plans to continually enhance the quality of our living environment and to strengthen the identity of places where people endear themselves to.
Vision for Punggol Point
As part of the Parks and Waterbodies and Identity Plans drawn up and exhibited in 2002, Punggol Point was envisioned to be developed into a sea sports and recreational destination, with rustic seaside dining opportunities. It was one of the five coastal areas identified under the Rustic Coast Proposals to introduce new activities and attractions to enhance their rustic coastal charm.
Turning Plans into Reality
A 4.9 kilometre promenade will be built to connect two proposed sports and recreational clusters at Punggol Point and along Sungei Serangoon (please see Annex). The promenade will also be linked to new park connectors planned by NParks along Sungei Punggol and Sungei Serangoon. Together, these will complete the entire waterfront promenade loop around Punggol from Sengkang Park to Punggol Park, providing a continuous walk along the Punggol coastline and creating new recreational opportunities at the waterfront for public enjoyment. Visitors could also enjoy a vantage lookout point to the sea from the tiered boardwalk at the entrance area at Punggol Point.
The existing Punggol Point is a popular recreation spot for activities like fishing and camping. To enhance its use, a new 0.6 hectare park will also be built to provide complementary facilities. Featuring a lotus pond, it will integrate with the promenade and the beach.
Construction will begin next year and is expected to be completed by 2010. Look Architects has been appointed to design and build the waterfront promenade and park.
Besides these new facilities, there will also be a horse-riding centre and a proposed food & beverage development at Punggol Point. The site for the horse-riding centre has been awarded recently. The site for the food & beverage development has been put on the Reserve List in the Government Land Sales Programme for application by interested developers.
Mrs Cheong Koon Hean, URA’s CEO said, “The facilities will improve the accessibility and connectivity of the area. Together with the new leisure attractions, the distinct character of Punggol Point will be enhanced and the area enlivened.”
Partnering our Community
The design proposals for the new waterfront promenade and park will be exhibited at the Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC Kampong Family Day on 18 November 2007 from 9.00am to 5.00pm. The biennial event will be opened by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence and MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.
“I am really happy to see that more facilities are being introduced in this area. These will no doubt attract more people and inject greater vibrancy here. We will continue to work closely with the URA in its implementation of the plans,” said Mr Charles Chong, MP for Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC.
