About Place Management

Place management is a process through which stakeholders work together to make a place more vibrant and attractive to its users. This process is usually undertaken by a mix of public, private and community-based entities. Among other initiatives, place management addresses street-level needs such as managing key public spaces and venues, and seeks to enhance business and economic activities. It also entails introducing, supporting and promoting programmes and activities to encourage vibrancy and draw more visitors to the precinct.

URA has identified place management as an important thrust to optimise the investments made by the public and private sectors in the development of our precincts. To date, URA has implemented place management policies across key precincts in the city centre to shape them into distinctive destinations for all to enjoy.

URA’s Place Management Department (PMD) takes the lead in planning and implementing the authority’s place management efforts. The department directly oversees the Marina Bay and Singapore River precincts. It also helps to coordinate and align the various place management initiatives carried out by other public agencies in the city centre, working collectively with them to enhance and enliven locations such as Orchard Road, the Civic District and Bras Basah-Bugis.
