Introduction     Plan showing Gateways, Landmark Sites & Focal Points

Gateways

Gateways give a sense of entry into the city, such as the view of our city skyline from the Benjamin Sheares Bridge.

They could take many forms, from a structure to a view, to a landmark building.

The two additional gateway sites are:

    • The Merdeka Bridge as a gateway from Kallang, and
    • The site where 78 Shenton Way is located as the gateway into the CBD.

Landmarks sites

These are strategic and highly visible locations where we would like to encourage developers and design consultants to put up distinctive buildings.

At such sites, URA is prepared to relax some urban design guidelines to encourage outstanding building designs.

The four landmark sites that have been added are:

    • The Rochor Centre site,
    • The Gateway site,
    • The future sale site along Victoria Street, and
    • The Singapore Trademart site.

Focal points

These are popular public spaces which draw activity and people such as Ngee Ann City Plaza along Orchard Road.

We can enhance these spaces by having prominent sculptures or other art installations.

The five focal points that have been added are:

    • Esplanade Park,
    • Open space at Raffles Place,
    • Open space at People's Park,
    • Hong Lim Park, and
    • Marina Bay water spout feature.

In addition to the above, there are also some public spaces within the landmark sites identified. For example, Shaw House, which sits on a landmark site, has an open public seating area. Should it be redeveloped in the future, the developer will still be required to provide a similar public space at this vibrant junction along Orchard Road.
